When I tried this one neat it numbed the taste buds. It is rough, hot, very rustic. Pretty much a 125+ proof blast of whiskey. Definitely not the way I'd take it on a regular basis
For comparison I'm going to do all of these with a splash of water. To do this one I poured an oz in the glass in the picture and added half an oz of cold water from my Britta in the fridge.
It opens up quite well. The rough edge is still there but I get some vanilla nose and some oakyness and sweetness. I don't get much charcoal, I'm going to guess that it is not aged for too long or the barrels don't have a heavy char or more likely that it goes into bourbon barrels that have been used once.
Even at full strength It made a pretty tasty Manhattan, but then that's pretty hard to screw up. A few oz with a heavy splash of Carpano Antica and a dash of angostura bitters for me. I've had a couple of those with no complaints
