There are strong reasons for letting this play out a little bit. Sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but the United States is not terribly popular in North Africa.

Better to work behind the scenes and effect regime change using old-fashioned espionage and diplomacy. Ya know?  Kinda like how we shoulda approached Afganistan from the beginning.

You mean how we worked in Iran with the Shah, Nicaragua with Noriega, and on and on.  Yup we are so loved in those and so many countries where the CIA was pulling the strings.

Or do you just mean we have to have effective intel and really try to be diplomats? 

Honestly that is what I would prefer but I think US foreign policy has spent too much time as the feared bully on the block to morph into a respected eleder statesman.  Well it could be done but NOT without losing huge ground to China and creating Cold War II in my view.
