Question on how you store your cigars...

Post by mroneeyedboh »

I have a Wineador and it has cedar drawers and shelves. I know if you plan on leaving the smokes to rest then leave them in the SLBs or boxes. And if you plan on smoking them you can either put them in the drawers or leave them int he boxes. What Ive noticed is that the cigars loose their smell when they are kept loose in their drawers. Is this because of the atmosphere within the Wineador? As in the oils or smells are allowed to move around more versus being contained within a box? I hope this is making sense... lol

It just seems that when they are pulled form their boxes and put into the drawers they loose that rich tobacco scent you can pick up from SLBs and they take a bland/maybe cedar scent/musky scent if they sit int he drawers for a year or two. Other than that they smoke good and RH is 65% +/- a few... No mold etc.

Cooler that I cleaned out and let it sun dry. Holds humidity better than my desk top humidor.

Oh man, I have 3 drawers in my New Air and they are all full. When I open the door, I get an amazing whiff of cuban tobacco. I love it. I do have SLBs in there as well for my pricier stuff, or stuff that I want to keep together, but its more for organization.

What you want is constant humidity, constant temperature, and very little air flow. What those values are is debatable. Most cigar keepers keep humidity between 63rh - 70rh and temperature between 60F - 67F. Choose your numbers, stick with them for years, and you will be rewarded. Personally, I keep my cigars at 65F and 65rh.

I have 4 Coleman 28 Qt Marine Coolers that I keep in my closet.  Each cooler has an 8oz HCM bead bag and round digital hygrometer sitting inside.  Boxes in most and loose cigars.  I'm not one who constantly feels the need to check on the temp/rh, as I know the beads keep a consistent 65% RH and the temperature fluctuates between 65* to 67*...

Small CC-100 model Newair. Have 6 65% Bovedas in there. Unplugged the wires to the thermoelectric unit but left everything else. Don't need the temp control in my basement and found that the thermo unit drew a small amount of power creating just enough cooling effect to drop the RH a point or 2 even if temp was set above the actual temp. Works like a dream holding a constant %65 with temps at about 68-69 in the summer and now down to 64-65. Had some trays I was using in my tupperdore before I moved into this. They just barely fit. Replaced the analog hygrometer with a front mount round Hygroset. Had to ream out the hole a little. Also have an adjustable Xikar mounted on the front of the bottom tray but not in this pic

Igloo 48qt Coolers for boxes via WalMart for sub $20 with Heartfelt beads. Ugly but very effective.

I personally keep everything in boxes. Singles are still kept with other singles, but in a cab that is now empty. I am not a fan of letting cigars sit open to the rest of the humi. I too think that they don't have that smell when you grab them if they are just open. I am of the opinion that they age better when mingling within their original box. Whether that box has been opened and you are smoking from it, or it's ageing, I don't pull boxes until they are empty.
