Monte 2's - Fakes?

Post by kgoings »

I purchased from Ian Ross. I see there is a large thread on him now. He has good trader feedback and is not on the scumbag list. Just posting pics of the 97 Monte 2's I bought from him. I was going to resell them and was honest about where I got them which is how I found the thread on him now a year later. Thoughts on the cigars?

Based on the variation in the shape of the heads from the angle of the photo, snd the variety of colors in the same box, they are fakes.

Monte#2s are one of the most faked vitolas out there.  I've been keeping 2 or 3 fakes I got (knowing they were fakes) at CFC in '99 just as a reference of how off the shape can be.

Look at a real box of #2s, they will all be the same color and all the heads are exactly alike.  Turn that box on it's side and tap the heads against the side and look at how different the lengths are in that top row.

I've gotten weird stuff from Cuba, I've got a box of '98 Punch Chruchills that I bought at the la Casa in Miramar (in Havana) that the top row has 3 or 4 different lengths, but I've never seen  Monte #2s look "rough" ever.  They are a flagship vitola of Montecristo.

Wade-while I agree with a portion of what you posted I disagree with some of it also.  Piramid shaped cigars are not made from/with molds which is why they are the toughest cigars to roll and why only the most experienced rollers roll them.  That said in my rather vast experience with Monte 2's the caps are almost never uniform.  Remember, each box is comprised of cigars from many different rollers.  Each has his own way of rolling and thus, since molds are not used, a slightly different shaps.

I am in no way saying that the cigars are real.  I am just saying that you cannot tell from the caps if they are (as compared to straight sided cigars which have specific ring guages and which have a specific type of cap.  The variations in color, however, is a red flag.  Each box should have the same colors through out the box and there should not be a distinct variance between cigars in the same box.  Would love to see more pictures of the box and the actual cigars to make a better assessment.

I never received the box, he kept it for the 'rest of the cigars' those are pictures he provided me. I can post more pictures of the cigars if you like. But I am going to be out of town till Next Friday so it will be a little bit. Let me know what specific type of pictures you want and I will post them.

I am already resigned to the fact that I took a $400 beating. You live and you learn. I guess I have some dog turds to smoke lol. I smoked a couple and they were not terrible, I just thought 'maybe I just like newer stuff'
