Fetish: "A course of action or inanimate object to which one has an excessive and irrational commitment."
After yesterday's thread about the coffin of 2 single Bashert's selling for $400, I was wondering what you guys thought about the principle of the situation.
Clearly someone, out of either desperation to have the next HTF cigar or due to this growing fetish of rare liga privadas, was willing to go as far as to offer another member $400 for a coffin of Basherts.
Now, here's where my question comes in:
If someone is willing to hand you a ridiculous amount of money, much more than you would expect to receive, for a couple of cigars that you have, would you take advantage of their fetish and sell it to them for what they offered? Or would you tell them that the amount of money is much too high and you would rather sell it at a lower price?
I realize these things are easier said than done, but I've encountered this situation from both sides and these situations are truly when you see if someone is a BOTL or just here to take advantage and turn profits.
Of course, that last statement is just my opinion and I'm not using this as an attack against the member who sold these cigars, it simply sparked a thought and I'm interested to hear what you guys think.
Should a BOTL profit off of a fetish?

We all have different relationships to money, largely a function of how much we have.
Some people will gladly pay ~$100 for a Cuban Gran Reserva while I, myself, would never pay that much for a cigar.

Some people have paid $200 for that cigar. $100 was the going rate yrs ago. All to one's own choices. You have a car that you want to sell and think its worth about $100 so you advertise "For Sale Best OFFER" and someone offers you $2,000. You think many/anyone would say "no, it's not worth that much, just give me $100"???

Perhaps the seller knows that he is selling a lemon car yet pretends that everything is perfect for a higher bid.

This..... We all lead different lives because of our relationship to money. I don't have hardly any extra cash at all and tend buy heavy around tax time and sometimes take money where I can find it. Someone who has a higher income may not miss that money and it's a matter of convenience. Now if it's a friend or someone I am close to that is different entirely. It's a free world though.

I should also say there is a line where you become a dick scalper in my mind as well. Especially when it comes to pee charging 20x or even selling gifts.

That is your opinion, and you are entitled to it, and you are also entitled to express it in this room; however, one of the major reasons for the success of this site is that the market is allowed to set prices, and at least on the "for sale" threads there are no price police.
Personally, I don't buy into hype, never really have. I used to watch people wetting all over the floor like excited puppies looking for unreleased shapes from Carlito. The big deal in those days were perfectos and torps of various designs, then one day it dawned on me that once you clip it and light it it looks and tastes just like every other FFOX, and I've never cared since. (I think that was in about 2001 or so)
Then a few yrs later Pete Johnson took Carlito's playbook to the illogical extreme and made pretty much everything he sells a limited edition, and viola, time to go get the mop again. As long as they aren't pissing on your floor don't worry about it, I don't.
Lastly, There are people out there with enough money that they can spend what seems to be ridiculous sums for cigars that they want, but to them, it's expedient, they don't want to spend hours searching, so dropping a couple of hundred or a couple of thousand, makes no difference to them, as long as they get what they want. I've watched auction lots go for more than I paid for my Chevy PU. It would be nice to have that kind of cash laying around, but other than that I don't think much about it.

One more thing, some of you seem to confuse a BOTL with a friend. As cigar boards go, I only frequent this board and CF so when I started seeing BOTL a few yrs back I had to go figure out what it meant. What I've found is that it usually means someone who wants something, frequently at less than the market price, whether for their own use or to resell at a higher price.
It would be wonderful if we were all friends, but we're not. Just because I share two interests with someone (cigars and internet BBs) doesn't meany anything in the grand scheme of the world. I've met some of the best friends I'll ever have on this planet though these interests, and I've met some people that I wouldn't notice if I never saw or heard from them again, and still others that I can only wish that they would have their picture on milk cartons.
My friends can have pretty much anything in my humidor for the price of sharing some time together, and a BOTL is something bourbon comes in and spell check should have caught.
