Little help with diagnostics - Trace routes

Post by WadeFillingame »

I may need a bit of help with some diagnostics to help the server techs figure out where/what may be causing things to run slower lately.

If you are having slow connection issues please run a traceroute and send me the results or post them in this thread. I'll forward the results to the server in hopes of diagnosing the problem.

Some online gamers may know how to do this, but otherwise, if you've never run a trace route you do it by:

go to "start" -> "run"
Type in "cmd" <enter>
at the command prompt type in "tracert onlinehumidor.com"

That DOS prompt is a scarry memory isn't it  :cal:

That tells us what routers you bounce through to get here (your route will be different to mine)

For those who haven't tried to copy/past in DOS lately/ever. Once you run the trace...

<right click> -> select all
<enter>

Then you can paste to either an e-mail or here.

Security note: If you are running on a corporate server or out of a business posting your trace is probably not a good idea. It could show some internal network structure that you may not want out on the interwebz; if you're on a home system running from a router to a modem to the ISP there isn't much that posting here is going to tell anyone.

I don't think it is a problem on the route, I think it is something on the server but the host says there is no problem.  Speed here has greatly improved so it may have been solved.

Without pointing fingers or naming names...I've been on quite a few trouble-shooting sessions with various ISP's over the years and on more than one occassion things have "magically" gotten better when they claim to have made no changes whatsoever...

Just 2 cents from the peanut gallery...  ;)

Things are working great for me, I think this is the fastest OLH has ever run since I have been a member. Thanks Wade for your hard working and a big thanks to the people who helped you.

For Mac users, here's how to do the same thing:

-- Launch Terminal.app (in /Applications/Utilities)

-- type into the terminal window:
traceroute onlinehumidor.com
-- Copy the output, and paste it into the email
