sealed box vs opened box

Post by shaun341 »

I am curious why people Iso sealed boxes.  I don't see the difference personally if I bought a box off someone that had been opened or not cause I am going to smoke them anyway.  Just curious on why people specify looking for a sealed box of whatever.

I think this is just a personal preference.  Here are a couple of reasons in my opinion.

1) If your looking to aquire a box to give as a gift, I would always want it to be sealed. I have several close cigar buddies and have given them boxes for their birthdays or special occasions. (sealed is just better etiquette)

2) If your looking to keep the cigars for collecting purposes only - some boxes retain more of the collectable value if still factory sealed. Down the road if you have a sealed box you wish to trade for something else you may get a better result compared an opened box.

3) If your planning on smoking them, then It doesn't matter in my opinion either way is good, opened or sealed

just my 2 cents...

I never would have thought about giving them as a gift being better edict ( makes sense) and I can diff see your second point!

Although if gifting a sealed box I'd be afraid of mold or damage.

^^ this

Personally, I'd pay 10%+ more if it's sealed. Crazy to some, preference for me.
Be sure and make deposits in all areas of your life, because at some point you will need to make a withdraw. No deposits are more important than those made in relationships.

Guess its just preference. Almost ever box I own has not been sealed. Was surprised last week when I tried a new vendor and two sealed boxes showed up at my door. Was kinda cool and I am sure for a pure collector sealed would hold a premium.
Most boxes I have gotten from a vendor that posts pictures of the cigars, which is nice as I can see what I am getting and how dark and oily the cigars are, but yet again just preference.

The thing is a real collector would never buy a sealed box.  He may look at a sealed box, open it and buy it but would NEVER buy it sealed unless the seller guaranteed it's condition.  The seller has no idea what is inside.  Was it infested by beetles? are the cigars moldy?  Were they damaged in transit or storage?

A friend of mine bought me a box from an LCDH abroad. The box was sealed. The cigars inside were dry as bones, and not a single cigar was without cracks.

There is a huge risk in buying sealed boxes.

Yes, I agree as far as CCs I always inspect them... After thinking about it you are correct. As far as NCs the only boxes I keep sealed are for gifts and/or collecting purposes are usually new releases. The boxes I may leave sealed are mostly Opus X and I've never seen an OpusX box with issues as long as it has a C+ boveda/humi pack in factory box (I'm willing to take the gamble on that). I would say 99% of the time I inspect them unless I give them as a gift, or want to just keep it sealed for personal preference. I maybe should have clarified this in my 1st reply above.

Very well said.

This goes for CC or NC's.  I've seen it all, including the oddball situation where a whole box of sticks are damaged and the rest of them were perfectly fine from the same lot.  For me, it's always inspect first, wouldn't matter if it was the only box of its kind in existence.  I have some boxes that have been sealed for many years and at this time, there's no point to go back and open them on my personal stock, but there's been a few rare times where I've regretted not inspecting a box upon first receipt.
