I've done some testing of this product (for science!)..cocktails during next round............
Mishima (note he's a novice, be gentle): Too spicey, way better with a little water
JC:
Neat:
- Nose - Nice, spice, very strong.
- Taste - WOHHHH!! POW!!
w/Ice:
- Nose - very nice, a bit of spice, heat walks away
- Taste - wow, generous spice, nice mouth feel and anticipating a cocktail, believe it will be the best of the bunch in a cocktail.
BobbyK: Starts smooth, then power, strong floral notes, should be great in cocktail.
GGinSF: Awesome with ice, strong nose even with ice, "should i make a manhattan now"?
Jason:
Neat: my favorite nose of the bunch, strong floral notes, spice, can i have more?

Revisited tonight on a rock. This may be the best of the four samples. Lots of spice, caramel and a nice long finish. Yummy!

Re: Smooth Ambler Old Scout Rye
I put this one to the test tonight.
Straight up
This is a pretty good whiskey. You can swirl it on your tongue and it's not hot at all. It has a very leathery middle. The finish leaves a little bitterness on the back of the tongue, kind of an herbal note. I don't get any sweetness from this one anywhere.
On the rocks
The leather I got straight up is gone, but so is the bitterness. Still no sweetness but very enjoyable. The 100% rye flavor really comes though.
I haven't made a mixed drink with this one that I can review (or remember enough to review) but I'm expecting that it will make a really good Manhattan with something sweet to go with the solid oak and rye flavors that I get from it with no mixers.
I backed this one up with a 2 finger pour of Redemption Rye. The Redemption is a lot sweeter at about the same proof. Comparing the two you can definitely identify the rye flavor, I think the rye comes through clearer in the Old Scout.

Re: Smooth Ambler Old Scout Rye
Sipping this straight from a Glencairn tonight after a review hiatus due to the birth of a baby boy. I like this one a lot. There is definitely a lot of spice to it. Cinnamon red hots, orange zest, caraway seeds, anise and oak. I did not add any water and found it to be very drinkable at such a high proof. This would probably make some very tasty cocktails. Thanks again, Doc!
