Is is possible ... ... ...

Post by BigSteve »

to get a mild CC (hope I'm getting the codes here correct, I've not used my de-coder ring in years) right out the box. I read so much here about the aged variety that it makes me wonder if all sticks must sleep prior to firing up. There have been a few suggestions made to me recently that I'll have to work at acquiring but curious what everyone thinks in general.

Aged does not mean mild per say.  Aging a cigar allows the tobacco to mature and lose the amonia and other non-desirable qualities that hinder flavor.  It also allows the essential oils in the leaves to mary creating a balanced and smooth taste that most seasoned smokers find desirable.  You can smoke a mild cigar that is still young and have it taste harsh and bitter because it is in its sick period, ie. not ready to smoke.  That said, the stronger the cigar the longer it will generally take to balance out and become more smokable.  Additionally, many believe that in the last number of years, say since '06 or so, Habanos SA has been using aged leaves, thus creating cigars that are ready to smoke much sooner then in years prior, some would even say within the first year.

Recently I have smoked a number of recent production cigars that are medium to mild and they were indeed smoking quite well.  These have included RyJ Ex. No. 4, H Upmann Mag 46, JL No. 1, and the Opus X Power Ranger, okay... okay... just kidding about that last one!!  :smiley-cool:

Best of luck in your quest.

I am a buy 'em and smoke 'em cigar collector. I do not have a big stash.

I have two active humidors and a wine fridge cooliodor, but we still manage to go through the cigars without aging them too long, especially since our recent mail strike.

Note, we try to buy the best cigars we can afford, and if the age on them, all the better!
Great coffee, cigars and whiskey. Love them all.

That has been my problem in the past. I end up smoking the cigars quicker than I can age them. Maybe, once I finally get some aged and taste the difference it will be easier for me.....
