Newbie questionNew

Post by Jbruno »

I am new to this forum and cigar forums in general.  I was directed here after commenting on another forum about how much I enjoyed the cuban cigars I got to smoke on vacation.

I am interested in trying to find some more cubans to smoke, but I am not familiar with all of the ins & outs of the process.  I have figured out;

PP - Paypal
CC - Cuban Cigar

But there are mentions of gifts and 3.5% on posts that I am not quite sure what they mean.

I am all for making some purchases from other members, also does any one recommend any reputable online sources for shipping CCs to the US?

Thanks!

I do not care for PP but some of the kats will explain the 3.5%.

The FOGs (Fucking Old Guys) will not give up sources very easily. This being your 2nd post here at OLH, I would not give you my sources JMHO.Do you have a home board??

I definitely understand & respect that.  And if someone has a good source I wouldn't expect them to just volunteer it away, I would just like to get some help in the right direction if at all possible.  But, that is why I would like to figure out the in's & outs of the buying and selling on here since I don't have a solid source.  Right now a one way street since I have nothing to offer.  But, have to start somewhere.

As far as home board.....this just became it I guess.  New to the forum & Cuban side of cigars, I got my first taste of a CC in St. Maarten earlier this month, and loved it!  That led me to ask and try to find more out about acquiring them.  Unfortunately, I have maybe one friend who smokes cigars so it is somewhat of a solo affair.  A cigar, some whiskey, and a nice evening on the deck.  Sometimes my wife will join me for a smoke, yep she does smoke them as well.

Jon, if OLH is your home board, stick around and read. Several of the kats have the scumbag list in their profile. Read it.

What other forum directed you here to OLH??

I was directed here by a guy from a duck hunting forum, Great Lakes Waterfowler.  There is a forum that mentions cigars, drinks, etc and I commented about my CC experience on vacation.  He directed me here as a possible place to buy and sell and he also gave me a couple of different possible web sites to visit to make purchases.  As I said earlier, once I got a taste I want to experience more.  I've smoked numerous different cigars over the years, but nothing that I enjoyed like that first Cuban.  Of course, I spoiled myself and had a Cohiba BHK 52.  But, I was on vacation so, what the heck.  After that I bought a 3 pack of Partagas Series P No.2.  Enjoyed every minute of them. I went back and forth about trying to get a box of those BHK 52's back in and eventually passed on the idea.  Of course this time the customs guys said no more than "Welcome home, have a nice day".

OK, well grew up in Ohio.  Probably started smoking the occasional cigar in college.  Nothing fancy, usually what some one else bought since none of us really knew much  at that time.  For the next 10-15 years or so it was the occasional smoke here and there, take a couple to the golf course or just stop and pick one up whenever the mood struck.  Probably in the last 5-10 years I have really grown to smoke cigars more often.  usually, I would buy what I was going to smoke that day, never thought about my own humidor.  As a result, I was always trying something different, give it the smell test and whatever was recommended.  Ranged from petit coronas all the way to the churchills.  Have tried the natural cigars through the most of the Acid line.  I kept a few of those Acids on hand because my wife enjoyed them, and for the friends that would smoke on rare occasions, they were an easy and flavorful smoke.  I have found that I enjoy anywhere from a light-medium flavored cigar to some nice strong cigars.  Nothing that says to me that is what you need to smoke regularly.  I can't help but repeat it, when I finally had the chance to smoke a great CC I was hooked.  So, now my quest is to repeat that or come as close as possible.

I am at the point where I think I may need to expand my humidor capability, look at buying a few things by the box to have always on hand.  As I said previously, my cigar smoking friends are not many.  But, that doesn't stop me from sitting out back with a smoke and a cocktail.

Welcome! For future reference do not store acids (or other infused cigars) with regular cigars. My advice to you is find a humidor you think will work and buy something 4-5 times bigger. Trust me you'll need it. Its a slippery slope and a fun hobby.

Kind of thought it wouldn't be a good idea to store those together.  I had a feeling those would mingle, especially as aromatic as they can be.

Kicking around the idea of doing the wine fridge to humidor conversion.  I have been doing a little research on that, it doesn't seem to difficult.  Some concerns about the temps though.  Most of the wine fridges seem to only go to about 64-66 degrees.  I always thought the 70/70 was the best way to go.  Right now temp in my little humi running around 69-70, RH 67-69.  Seems to be a bit lower during the winters here.  I have 2 shot glasses and and 2 humi pillows in there right now.  Down to about 8-10 sticks right now, about time to place an order

If the temp is around 63-66 it wont be a big deal. I personally like mine at 66/66.
