See how very knowledgeable guys disagree?

This is what I mean when I say it is NOT obvious... and why I would not put a plumey or moldy cigar in my mouth (go ahead and make any jokes you want)...

One time Matthew and I were in this store in Victoria BC that sold cigars and diamonds of all things. Some of the cigars were covered in a light mist of finest white dust. Yes, plume most likely but a customer said it was mold.

The point was at retail, the very discussion was a turn off.

If it is because of photography, simply say the cigars are in fine condition and there is no or minimal plume (or something like that).

Cheers,

CB

Great coffee, cigars and whiskey. Love them all.

CB, I have been in a local cigar shop (not a great shop in my eyes) who is too cheap to use distilled water in their humidifiers. Instead, they use tap water and when their humidifiers pump out the vapor it dries in a fine white mist on their cigars due to mineral deposits (from the tap water). It is NOT mold. Any cigars that I do buy there, I buy from underneath the top layer, and the ones underneath are not covered in the fine white mineral deposit dust and they look fine.

Either way, white (or green) stuff on cigars is not always mold (mold grows in patches or spores, and is easily distinguished under a microscope or magnifying glass), plume looks like fine multi-colored crystals (depending on the light) and does not grow like mold, and the white mineral deposits look like a white dust that is over the entire surface.  I have seen all 3, and they all look different and to me are easily discernable.

Good for you, but all of that just grosses me out.

And I am now in the $10+ stick bracket and I am not taking that chance. And Matthew? He would look at me like bought junk. He has the crazy idea that I know what I am talking about with this cigar thing.

And to be clear, elderboy's cigars look fine to me, not that anyone asked.

At least everyone here knows to wipe off the plume of any sticks they might sell you. To me, plume is a trophy and a reward for proper storage and aging of my sticks... and I have never read anything stating that having plume on some well-aged sticks or that smoking sticks with plume on them is bad.

A doctor (literally) and member of my home forum did a chemical analysis of plume.  He has his PHD in Biochemistry.

Simply put, what makes up 50-70% of the plume he sampled was Propylene Glycol.  Which we are all familiar with as a moisture stabilizer (humectant).  It has a sweet taste to it.

The rest of the plume was a list of many other organic compounds, none of which would be harmful if ingested.

I got to find, or ask him, for that write-up he did.  It was pretty in-depth and a great read.

When you spend the kind of money I spend on 'em, you make sure everything is A OK, always...Plume is the sign of well aged and well taken care of cigar....that Monte in question is 4 years aging.....I'm guessing not too many people would have a problem sampling sticks from my collection lol...
