Have Pete & Pepin Gone Too Far???

Post by Knuck42 »

Five years ago guys worshiped these two.  Three years ago guys got on waiting lists to ensure they got the lastest LE.  Recently the TSBC looks like it should be renamed the "Try & Dump Your Tats Here Room."  I say "Try" because these boxes seem to sit and sit, price drop after price drop.

Personally I'm glad for it as I made a decision years ago to not drink the RE/EL/LE Kool-Aide.  And I'm all too happy to watch this money grabbing scheme blow up in the faces of these guys.  I can only hope the same happens to Hanbanos SA, though I expect that's hoping for a little too much.

I doubt it will ever happen with Habanos SA, at least not anytime soon. The market is quite a bit different when it comes to Cuban LE/RE's.

I think when it comes to PJ, he was really on a hot streak with some really excellent smokes with his brown line and La Riqueza among others. A nice guy that the average Joe could sit down with, share a smoke and relate to.

When he first started to come out with limited releases like the Black, everyone including myself went nuts.

After awhile and what seems like a limited release every time we turn around, you start to feel somewhat like he and Tatuaje are not the same as it used to be. Kind of leaves a bad taste in your mouth for him and the brand.

I would just be happy to see him get back to basics and make cigars that I can go and find at my local or online retailer any time I'm looking for them.  A majority of those cigars have been way better than some of the LE's I bought before I caught on grew weary of the chase.

Could not agree more.  I said the same thing back then.  Going too crazy with way too many new cigars and special releases.  Just focus on what is best and push them out.  I have gotten to the point I don't even pay attention to their lines.  Too much crap to wade through for me.

  Here, here.

*blushing*  Though I have been known to *sip* HSA RE kool aid. Especially that Por Larranaga flavor.  ;D

Same here, but then I learned to stop chasing HTF's when I realized that most often there is no value in it, just bragging rights.  Fuente taught me that with their "seasonal" releases.  I know I'm not alone in this as most of their HTF's became NSHTF's (No So HTF).  When Pete & Pepin, (P&P or just PP for short???), started with this crap I wasn't even interested.  I've said it before and I'll say it again... coffin shaped boxes my ass!

I agree. The market is to full of gimmicks. Just make a good quality smoke at a decent price. I am okay with the occasional special release (10yr, 20 yr anniversary) for very special occasions. But not a special release each week just to make some extra $$ from the hype.

Yes they have! Its just one thing after the other. Up until recently I made sure I bought every release from Tatuaje and Viaje and I have come to the realization that for the most part they aren't that good. I put all this time and money into acquiring these cigars when all I should be doing is building my inventory for the future. What I will be doing from here on out is buying cigars (mostly Cuban & Fuente) 3-5 boxes of a particular cigar each year so 10-20 years from now I have stock (10/20 yo) in the cigars I know I love. Will I miss out on some great cigars probably but in the end will I be just as happy and or satisfied definitely.

I've been seriously contemplating this strategy lately as well as I'm sick of all these sub-par LE's these guys keep pumping out. If I miss out on something I can always pick up a 5er or something here at OLH.
