Hamilton (the play)

Post by WadeFillingame »

Yes, I know this topic is several yrs late, and hopefully I don't have to move this to the BZ.

I am typically not a musicals of any kind guy, I'd honestly rather do research in the DOT regulations than listen to or watch The Sound of Music.  Now over the yrs I've been to or watched a few usually because I was going with my wife, and by the time they were over I could say I enjoyed them, but when I do it's almost always a stage performance and definitely not something that was made for movie.

All that said.  At my wife's suggestion we watched Hamilton recently. I knew most of the history, which is why she insisted that I'd enjoy it. There were a couple of things that I looked up afterwards to understand exactly what happened, context, and just to check.

I will start by saying I liked it.  In the first act I found it amusing that my 12yo son has been hearing the music in the car with the wife and finds King George's first appearances hilarious and can sing along with him.

I have never read any reviews, never cared enough to, so what follows is my opinion....

This production garnered immense  attention, and from what I understood from media headlines over the last few yrs was that this play got a lot of raves, mostly because of the casting of people of color in the roles of historical figures that were white.  After watching it I think that was a fabulous decision, because IMO w/o that it would not have garnered much attention from the typical population that pays attention to stage productions. The topic is US history, that's not a big seller in that crowd.  From what I can tell it is historically accurate, and a bunch of people who would never have bothered to look may have learned a little about our history.

...and if one took the time to read a little about the mud fight that was the election of 1800 that is central to the plot you might figure out that politics is not particularly different today than it was in 1800.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is talented and knows how to produce a great play but I wouldn't give it a whole lot of weight on its accuracy. Broadway and Hollywood have a tendency to take creative license with history making it less dry for the masses.

I'm in the same boat as you with musicals just not being my thing, but my wife is nuts about this one.  It's coming to the Kennedy Center in DC this summer and even without any of the original cast, the wife is forcing me to gom apparently offering to watch it again on Disney+ was not the correct answer. lol  On the bright side, her anniversary gift is all taken care of.

By the way, good tickets are expensive, which I'm ok with, but the service charge was $97 from the Kennedy Center themselves.  Absurd.

It's a nice place to see a play, but I'd rather support other endeavors at this point.
