Not impressed with HC7

Post by Sprintcars11King »

I recently bought a bottle of HC7.  More out of curiosity than anything else.  It's not terrible but not anything to write home about.  Which bottles from Cuba are the best in your opinions?  I personally enjoy Barbancourt Ruhm myself.  While not from Cuba it is some of the best I have found.

Barbancourt is my standard r(h)um as I love how dry it is compared to the typical Jamaican styles made from molasses tailings.  I enjoy HC Añejo Especial.  I've been told Matusalem is THE Cuban rum to buy, but it is not easy to source.

I picked up a bottle of la flor de cana 7 year rum a few years back and I really liked it. I liked it so much that I bought a bottle of 15 year or 12 year bottle of it and hated that.

I like hc 7 alright. Not much of a rum person but I don't recall anything spectacular about it either. Good not great imo.

IMO, HC7 is barely above a mixing rum (and the MSRP puts it into this range). Much better out there. If you like the sweet style, Ron Zacapa 23 might be up your alley.

I am a big fan of Seleccion de Maestros. Strikes a really nice middle of the road balance. Not too sweet. More bourbon-like than something like Barbancourt.

zacapa 23 and zaya 16 are my go to's, Diplimaticos may be venezuelan but can be a little syrupy like the Jamaican with the sugar cane. I remember when I bought my first bottle of HC7 thinking it would be amazing.  :rotf:

Heard nothing but good things about Seleccion de Maestros, may have to hit up John one of these days

I stopped drinking 3 or 4 years ago, no real reason just not my thing I guess. But my go to Rum was Ron Zacapa 23 Centenario Rum but I have a sweet tooth :bait: HC7 makes a hell of a Rum & Coke but to much heat for my palate. If you like SWEET Legendario Elixir De Cuba is the Kahlua of Cuba! You could put it on pancakes or over ice cream :rotf: But I loved to pour a few fingers and add a cubes of ice and sip while I was smoking a cigar!
