What is something you recently learned?

Post by Ridge »

Have you learned anything new recently?

I never knew airplanes have horns.

I must say the first visual that came to mind after reading that was a plane flying honking at the one in front of him to get out of the way.

Our guy at work recently stopped by to ask about something and he always gets to talking about something else. Then he always tells me something really interesting that I could have went the rest of my life without knowing.

He asked me if Santa's reindeer were male or female. I said male because of the antlers. He said that female reindeer can grow antlers. He was right.

I was able to try caribou in a meal once and it was delicious.

That a hot dog is a taco.

"If a starch surrounds a protein on three sides, it is a taco. Therefore, a hot dog is a taco. A sub sandwich can also be considered a taco if you don’t slice all the way through the bread.

The rule is explained more in depth on its website, cuberule.com, but the basic idea is as follows: a cube has six sides, and the food’s classification is dependent on how many sides the starch surrounds the protein."

Santa's reindeer are female.

Edinburgh University professors Gerald Lincoln and David Baird tell the U.K.’s Telegraph that Santa’s reindeer can’t be male for one simple reason: Only female reindeer still have antlers at Christmas; the males of the species shed their headgear before mid-December.

It's illegal to own just one guinea pig in Switzerland. It's considered animal abuse because they're social beings and get lonely.

There once was a man from Nantucket..

That for one hour per year, there are parts of Oregon where it's the same time as parts of Florida.

Parts of southeastern Oregon are in the Mountain Time Zone and part of the Florida panhandle is in the Central Time Zone.  The difference between those two time zones is one hour.

Thus, when - for that one hour - Pensacola, FL sets it's clocks back for Daylight Standard Time (before Oregon does so) it's the same time in those specific areas of those two states.

In Australia, the Moon is "upside down" from the point of view of northern hemisphere viewers.
