Fake Cohibas
A friend of mine that works in the same office building as I, just got back from a Mexico vacation. He pulled out a box (glass top of all) of 5 Cohiba Edicion Limitada 2010's to show me. I immediately knew they were fake. I'd say vitola wise (Ghost, I'll explain later...), they were 5x50.
1st thing I looked for was the triple-cap. Didn't have it. Then, I looked at the bands....very cheap looking and showed many signs of what I've learned to look for. My friend likes to smoke on occasion, but is not as into it as most of us are. I asked him how they smoked and he said they were "amazing". He paid $15 for this glass-top box of 5.
Do I tell him that they're fake, or let him continue to enjoy them?

Some would say that for health reason you tell him.....You never know what is rolled up in those sticks.
Also, no need to inspect the sticks at all....There are no, none, nada, cohibas in glass top boxes!

Yeah, I know that about glass-top Cohiba boxes. There was only one cigar left, so he had smoked the other 4 while in Mexico. I asked him how they smoked and he said they were great.
When I got burned on a box of Esplenidos, that garbage wouldn't even stay lit.

Also... there's no 2010 EL's released yet.... AND the cohiba robusto's are already a regular production smoke.

Re: Fake Cohibas
In your scenario I will always let the guy know. An educated man is less likely to make the same mistake twice. It's the well meaning friends & relatives that bring me back fakes from their vacations that I feel badly about telling.

Dead giveaway, they are fake, I've never seen anyone come back from "a Mexican vacation" with real Habaños

Glass top, fake, no need to go on

at this point why bother.

Tell him they are fake. I've had a number of local guys, almost all are ly high income guys, who have gone to Mex or the Caribbean and come back and wanted me to look at the Monte's or Cohoba's they picked up. I always tell them. The chances that anyone gets genuine Havanas in that portion of the globe is pretty close to zero.

Re: Fake Cohibas
About 10 yrs ago there was a herf in North Carolina. There were a lot of the old names from CF there Me, Scotty, Gomez, Gary and a bunch of others. These 2 guys sitting in the bar, not part of the group start talking about this friend that "gets Cubans all the time". We talk for another couple of minutes and they tell us that they are Cohibas in glass topped boxes :owned: There were about 3 of us talking to them and I swear my drink nearly came out of my nose. We all just busted out laughing, and they were like, What? What's so funny?
We finally regained enough composure to explain to them that they were certifiable fakes, bla, bla, bla whole story on glass topped Cohibas.
Ever see the Yankee's clubhouse after they beat the Braves in the WS? I've hears that there are pictures El Duque with a glass topped box. It's ridiculous how many of those things there are in the world.
