Do you buy into the "back story" of certain cigars?

I'm a bit skeptical of the Habanos S.A. Anejados line's backstory about being aged 5 to 8 years in the box prior to release.

Had the Montecristo Churchill Anejados and the H. Upmann Robustos Anejados and they were both very good but not really good enough to justify the price for me


Also skeptical of the story behind the Fuente Unnamed Reserve's being stored for 5 years before releasing them. Could be true, could be crap.

I actually have a friend who does a ton of contract work with Fuente and Newman, and has tons of knowledge about Fuentes and has close connections with the upper management of both, so I'll shoot him a message and see if he knows anything about the Unnamed Reserve story and post his response if he knows anything.


Only good thing about the Anejados is that you can get them in vitolas that aren't in regular production.

I will admit that I was buying the BS for about the first 6 months of quarantine from CF and Privada. I was just trying different things so I wouldn’t get bored while being stuck at home while my local B&M were closed. And like mentioned above the back stories and sales pitch are done well. What I can say is i now have two trays full of crappy cigars. On an average they probably hit on like 1 out of every 10 IMHO. Best thing to come out of them was the access to the Room 101 Death Buckets, I enjoyed them a lot.

im not a marketing guy, but I imagine the target consumer for this cigar name wears New Balance 407s everywhere and has at least 3 comorbidities.

No, back stories and family stories drive me completely crazy.  Its all marketing fluff in the end and even a family that has been in the business for decades and has the best rollers can still produce a mediocre cigar.  DE / Liga Privada are major back story marketers as are Ezra Zion, Caldwell, and Warped.

I can remember buying two boxes of Don Tomas cigars with a special candela wrapper that was lost for 20 years. I thought I fell into something special! I was just a kid but I don't remember liking those cigars very well.

I learned this lesson years ago, back when Lew used to run JR Cigars. I loved reading his marketing magazine and fell for quite a few of his stories. Most were dog rockets but I found a few gems along the way. Now days the hype has been taken to a new level on almost every cigar. Hard to discern a good cigar from the marketing, you just have to try one and see.
