And if you live in California like I do (land of secondary pricing) some stores make you buy a bundle just to get one allocation it's not a bad deal but it's how they get allocated bottles (Weller, blantons, etc). You have to buy so much of the cheap stuff from Buffalo trace their rums, vodka etc just to get a couple of bottles its the worst! I've completed my Weller line up just need to grt my hands on the single barrel and I will have all the Wellers!

Eventually the trendy crowd will pass on, though it's likely that a lot of them, once they've developed a taste for bourbon, will not move.

As for the "craft" distillers.  I went to Canada for the world championships in '17 and carried a few bottles with me to share and leave with some of my Canadian friends.  One night at the Motel I opened a bottle of something from NH that said bourbon on the label....  couldn't drink it on ice, couldn't take it even with Coke.  Poured that one in the toilet and left the bottle on the counter for the housekeeper to do with as she pleased.

Fortunately I also carried a bottle of Booker's and a bottle of 10yo Russell's Reserve, so all wasn't lost.

Soon all the ramped up production will be approaching 7-8 years in Rick house. Another few years and there will be a much better supply of 10-12 year old bourbons.

2014 (the year my son was born) was the last year I made of decent Pappy and BTAC haul.

I've actually been able to get quite a few allocations at fair prices, if you haggle the store owners show them proof they are using wine searcher to justify prices and offer to buy multiple bottles in cash they give in, most store owners know they can't move em at secondary! I got my pappy 15 for 200$ it had been sitting and sitting for over a year now and told him I'd take it off his hands if I got multiple bottles and paid cash! Seems to do the trick least for me it did

Great strategy but that wont work in the People Republik of Pennsylvania. State controlled Liquor system. After the skim a few hundred bottles of Pappy and BTAC for the politicians they lottery the rest off. 75,000 entries for less than a thousand bottles.

I wjsb I lived in a state ruined liquor world! Everything is retail but allocations are raffles which is so trash! Least in California bottles are plenty but prices are closer to secondary than retail

I’m also surprised Rum never took off.  So much good stuff out there.  I feel like tequila, though not my preferred spirit, is the next “big thing”
