When to bust into a new box or cab ?

Post by Paragon »

Have some cabs that are getting to have some age on them. Just curious about when I should consider trying them ? What do you do to figure if your stuff is ready ?

I generally wait to open a box based on previous experience with that box. I like Fonsecas fresh, Bolis after 3-4 years, and R&Js after 4-5. So I would base it on your experience with the brand previously. If this is your first time really trying this brand, sample one fresh, then one every 6 months after to see when it suites you.

I agree 100% with atomross13 or you could just meet me @ fumas with a couple sticks & we'll taste test together. :bangin:

I've smoked stuff that was great at one yr (e.g. '98 Fundadores) and I've had stuff that IMO no amount of age would fix (several boxes from '99/00)

really depends on the sticks. I often buy more than one box at a time, sometimes a lot more (which is why I'm still smoking '98 Punch Churchill's) and will crack one after a yr or two to see how they are doing.

Every marca is different, and every vitola within each marga is different as well.  Personally, I combine personal experienc with reviews from other BOTL's whose palate I trust when making such decisions.  I find in general that the larger the RG, the more time a cigar will need to more fully mature.  I also find that the stronger the marca the more the cigars benefit from aging, though all cigars seem to benefit from it to one degree or another.  Just my .02 fwiw

I would agree with this.  I've been smoking a lot of 99 stuff due to prices but most of it just isn't even worth the discount.  Compared to 98 production, and even to 02 production it just doesn't cut it and probably never will.
