Buffalo Trace Single Barrel Select Variations

Post by mpeter15 »

I recently picked up a small bottle (375ml) of Buffalo Trace West Lake View Liquors(Chicago, IL) Single Barrel Select, Barrel #163(Selected and bottled to celebrate their 25th year anniversary). When I tasted it, I was astounded at how much better/smoother it was than the standard Buffalo Trace blend that is mass distributed.  It got me wondering about other Buffalo Trace Single Barrel Select variations out there. Has anyone here had the opportunity to try a few different single barrel selections that could offer some insight on a few more good ones to try? Ultimately,  I'd love to settle on one that I feel is the most enjoyable and buy a case or so for my regular consumption. Any help/input would be greatly appreciated!

I don't think there are any shops out here on the west coast that have any. I've actually never heard of it. About the only rare product from BT I've seen out here is a bottle of single oak project and I picked up a couple bottles of baby saz, Sazerac Rye 6 year.

Well if you're interested in trying any of them, they sell the ones I have tried here: http://www.wlvliquors.com/?s=Buffalo+trace+wlv&post_type=product and they ship. I have tried Barrel #163 and #79 and both are great bourbons leaps and bounds above regular Buffalo Trace. Barrel #79 is on the sweeter side balanced nicely with a bit of spice(Think Orphan Barrel Rhetoric or Elmer T. Lee) and Barrel #163 is not overly pronounced in anything,  but is very balanced and insanely smooth(Think Van Winkle Special Reserve 12yr Lot B)

I forgot that I also tried Barrel #54, but compared to the other 2 it wasn't anything to get excited about.  It was definitely on the drier side resembling a rye more than a bourbon and it wasn't nearly as smooth as #163 or #79.
