The cocoa detail in the nose is compelling, and so is the firm core/soft edge texture through the mouth. Rye advances from the mid-palate, weaving back and forth to a nerve- and tongue-tingling finish. The ten years aging is apparent in texture, development, depth—but never results in overt oakiness in this apparently ageless barrel. The label notes "DSP_IN-1", so we know this was distilled at the former Seagram's distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, known previously as LDI. Older whiskeys from this distillery are quite rare, but items such as barrel 362 suggest their juice could age with the best of them. This is their 21% rye grain bill. -Jay Erisman

Neat, this one is far rougher than the above review would indicate.  Nerve tingling would be a good description.  Hot and numbing would be another.  This one that needs ice or water. 

I'm doing the same test for all four of these whiskeys  for my "on the rocks" test.  I'm cutting 1oz of whiskey with ½ oz of chilled water.  That about the same as letting an ice cube melt in a shot.  (in this one I put in an ice cube and stirred until it melted it up to 1½oz.)

My on the rocks test with this one it definitely comes through as a bourbon. Much different to the American whiskey, its got to be the time in the barrel.  I'd say you can tell it's aged when you give it a splash.  The sharp edges are gone.  The rye is there on the finish.  After it clears there is a bit of bitterness, nothing too strong but it's there.  I don't get any sweetness or vanilla from this one, it gives a mellow fullness in the finish of a good sip.  It's enjoyable as an on the rocks drink.

For giggles I compared this back to back with a McKenna 10yo bottled in bond 100 proof I have here prepared the same way.  (Don can laugh and say that's just Wade's excuse to have another drink, he may not be too far wrong) I like the Old Scout better.  It's a bit more complex and the flavor is a bit more full.  Neither show any sweetness. 

Both make a good Manhattan, but there the sweet comes from the vermouth or what ever that you add.

Neat: Dark chocolate, hints of cherry, very dry old leather, hot at 111.2 proof

On a rock: Darker chocolate, leather, a hint of clove and maybe cinnamon, dried cherry and a nice long tobaccoesque finish. Even becomes more delicious after diluting.

A classic Manhatten with Punt e Mes and Memphis barbeque bitters, brandied Luxardo cherries. French regional Ramon Alloñes beli. Honstly can't get much better on the side porch after a rain and in the candlelight when we hear a THUD!
A local resident fell from a dogwood tree landing in the crotch of the tree about 8-10 feet from our porch. A 4 foot + Black Rat snake.

A Bruxelles cocktail, 2 oz Old Scout 10, an ounce of Millz Premium, a dash of homemade Thanksgiving bitters and an orange zest. A Belgian Bolivar Regional.
