H&F Cigars

Post by armmmmm »

I understand the HQ & PSP cigars...can someone shed some light on what these H&F cigars are and why they come at a premium?

From CCW:
UK Travel Retail, Republic of Ireland, Gibraltar and the Channel Islands
For boxes of Havana cigars sold unopened by Hunters & Frankau, a "H & F Imported Directly from Cuba" sticker is used. These stamps are applied to all boxes for UK Travel Retail and the Hunters & Frankau export markets (Republic of Ireland, Gibraltar and the Channel Islands)

Some say H&F get the pick of the litter, worth a premium?  Not sure.

Some claim that Hunters & Frankau (H&F) receive the best cigars from Cuba due to the strong and lengthy relationship between the two. Though it is my understanding that as of 2012, Spain, France and China are now the largest markets for Cuban cigars. Frankly, many are of the opinion that H&F is a marketing scheme to justify the UK's high cigar prices, which are in part driven by exorbitant excise taxes.

A few folks on other forums have actually expressed regrets over shelling out extra for the H&F tag.  To be fair, H&F do what Rob does - eyeball a box and give it their educated guess as to whether they're that something special.  However, unless you smoke one or three out of a box, you're just guessing - educated or not.

Personally, I'll stick with Rob's opinions as I have as of yet to hear of him steering anyone wrong.  Too bad he won't accept the 15% discount on the PSP and HQ.

Might have been true 30 years ago, but nowadays the designation means nothing more than that of any other regional distributorship. I buy form 4 different regions, and quality varies little...mostly good, a few substandard, and a few stellar.

Re: Rob's marketing...very admirable and unique shtick, which I know a lot of people like. Just not something I bite on :)

I'm heading off to Southampton England at the end of June. I'll be staying at the White Horse hotel. I believe there is a H&F on the same block as my hotel!

Now to figure out what I want to smoke when I get there.....
