Online Proxy Bidding 101

I can tell some of ya'll don't use eBay much.

BR has implemented a similar proxy bidding mechanism.  It's standard in online auctions.  It's right there in their FAQ: https://www.bondroberts.com/faq

Do you have an "Ebay Style" Auto bid / Max bid feature?

Yes, this allows you to enter an amount you would like the site to automatically bid in US $5 increments up to. If another user sets a Maximum bid higher than your amount, the current bid will jump to US $5 above your Maximum bid amount.

Even live auction houses do it.  Christie's calls it an "absentee bid".

If you are unable to attend an auction, simply place an absentee bid (also commonly referred to as a written or commission bid) at least 24 hours before the sale and the Christie’s auctioneer will bid on the item for you. An absentee bid left in advance takes priority over the same bid amount in the room or on the telephones. If your bid is more than the seller’s minimum reserve, the auctioneer will try to win the item for you at the lowest price they can.

Sorry I did not fully read that. You are 100% right. Online bidding is that way so extra caution practices must be in place.

Cheers,

I've been using a sniper service on ebay for almost 15 yrs.

Make up your mind what the max your willing to pay, set your max bid hours to days in advance, if it's not maxed the sniper drops it in the last few seconds and boom either I get it or I don't. I get notified one way or the other.

I tend to win 75% or more of my tries when I actually drop a bid.  If it goes over my max before the bid goes it, well it was more than I was willing to pay.

100% agree and use the same process on any online auction. Decide my max bid and letteripp. Last two minute back and forth is kinky.

I stopped using sniping services and just set a reminder and input manually.

You’re definitely correct on approach imo. Set the amount you would be willing to pay, submit and move on win or lose.

BR is filled with idiots it appears. I don’t understand what the purpose is if not simply pushing prices up thinking it’ll benefit you (if you’re a seller) in the future.

Too bad sniping doesn’t work @ BR tho. Different end of auction strategy is needed.

Why can't you snipe on BR?

They auto extend the auction if you bid within (not sure exact timeframe) less minute or 45 seconds or something.

Ah popcorn. Always hated that. Totally takes the fun out of online auctions. Totally defeats the purpose IMO.

Some have told me it's "bad etiquette" to watch an auction and keep upping your bid during the final minutes as someone out bids you. They suggested that it was better etiquette to make one bid representing your max bid and then leave it alone. Still other have disagreed and said there's no problem with the last minute multi-click-bid approach.

IMO, I don't think there's anything wrong with swooping in at the end and outbidding the last bidder by .$5.00. I'm tuning in and doing the "work" and it's kinda fun (and expensive) sometimes. I had never heard of the "set-it-and-forget-it" bidding etiquette, but I don't do any online auction buying except for cigars.  if I'm wrong, someone please tell me. Oops, gotta go, there's a jewelry television auction closing in 4 minutes that I want to bid on  The tanzanite is mine!

Yep Lambeaux, absolutely nothing wrong with it.  That BR auto-extends the auction time when it happens makes it doubly acceptable.

The context of this thread being started was some shoutbox comments about what someone thought was "shady" bidding on BR.  Claims of "impossible" re-bids only seconds after a higher bid.  This thread was merely a explanation of why those bid timings were a result of earlier entered max proxy bids.  That's all.
