So if you spend the day in a long, contentions, frustrating email exchange with a twit of a co-worker I strongly suggest that you do not attempt to shave with a straight razor; seriously, a bunch of built up aggression is just not what you want when you are holding a phenomenally sharp naked blade to your face. 


The first couple of nicks should have warned me....    :bounce:  if I had a 'soul patch' like Dallas I could hang it on the wall as a pelt right now.

Naaa, I keep a styptic pencil in the cabinet.  Shaving with naked  blades on occasion will cause you to need one, not often but it happens, and if I don't have time to use a straight I use one of my "vintage" Gillette double edged razors. 

Id also avoid shaving with a straight razor if one is hung over.... ask me how I know

Wade, I've been there with the email exchanges myself.

I'm curious what razor you're using. My wife bought me the shave kit with the brush and soap and I love it. I'm thinking of ditching the typical razor and getting a straight razor.

I have 3 straights, I have two that are old, one is a about ½ inch blade "Made in Prussia"  So pre 1917.  

One is an old, not sure how old, "Merit" with a 5/8 inch blade.

Both of those are pretty square end blades


I also have a new Boker Tree "King Cutter" round end with a white (simulated ivory?) handle.

I picked the old ones up on ebay for under $20 each, the Boker was a lot more.

If you get into straights you will need to get the rest of the stuff, stones and strops to keep them sharp.  Unless you buy them from someone who sharpens them correctly they are no "shave ready" when you buy them.  The bevel needs to be set and then they need stoning.  

Round end blades are good for learning, you are less likely to lose track of where you are holding it and nick your ear/nose/face with it

My Gillette double edged collection I picked up as a lot on ebay. I wanted a Super Adjustable.  I picked up a lot of 8 or 9 that had one in it and have less than $20 each in them. I've given away a couple as gifts to friends.

I've got several Super Speeds, one from 1950, an Adjustable, and a Super Adjustable.

Both of the guys who were using new Merkur doubles swear that the Gillettes from the 60s I gave them are the best shaving razors they own.

Thank you for the information. I did t know you had to maintain the edge on the razors. I'm going to be googling today based on what you provided. I appreciate it.
