Actually, I like a drier rum for sipping, and a rummy friend of mine has had nice things to say about the Santiago, so it's only a matter of time.  He did tell me that the Havana Club is a bit over-rated and much better for mixing drinks than sipping with a ceegar.

Why not taste them all and post a review in the Bar n Grill section?

HC7 is a good rum, not particularly a great rum, for me it is kind of the standard that draws the line between only for mixing and good for sipping. I drink it with an ice cube.  I like it, though like many things company and location can make it seem like pure nectar

The Anejo Reserva I believe is the rum between HC3 and HC7 with no age statement.  Put it on par with a Bacardi amber, it's not for sipping.  I've substituted it in place of HC3 in a proper mojito. Good in Cuba Libre's.

The Santiago's I don't think I am familiar with, though I think may have had one or both, there is also a pretty good chance I was drunk at the time because I think it was with BrentP or possibly with some friends from around here while in Havana.


IMO there are not that many great rums in the world, they started to catch on just about the end of the big cigar boom in the late 90s and early 00s but just didn't quite catch.  There are still a few really good ones out there.  I do like me some rum, and I've tried a lot of them.  It is hard to find the big full flavored ones because the market is for something cheap that you can pour in a quart of juice and ice in a blender and serve to drunk college kids and women.

So, not a a Cuban Rum, but if you're looking for a very good sipping Rum that you may not have tried: Kirk and Sweeney 12yr Dominican Rum. I'll put it right up there with Zaccapa 23yr, similar in texture/mouthfeel but a bit drier in flavor profile than Zaccapa

I like the HC7 and have only tried the Anejo once ( really liked it). Always try to keep a bottle of the HC7 on hand...

I wish I would have saw this earlier. Santiago de Cuba may be the best rum brand produced in Cuba. It is the rum I personally prefer and keep at the house. The 7 year old is a stand by, and better than HC7 and half the price. It is made at the old Matusalem factory. Matusalem was the shit back in the day. They discontinued that line and started the Santiago de Cuba soon there after.

The 2 bottles of 12 and 25 yr will smash your havana club bottles of 7 and reserva..... as I am sure you have already realized. :)
