Taste is subjective. And your test while funny doesn't really hold up if in his mind he's not going to like it then he won't. A better test if you really wanted to educate him would be a side by side blind taste test.

A further/final update that will bring some closure to this whole story... I think this guy's stash of 4 and 5 year old NCs (now aged) that he has been aging in lock-n-lock containers have gone sour.  We all know Nics were meant to smoke fresh (typically 1 yr or less, is my rule of thumb), but he felt the need to buy buy buy and age for many years, and when the shit hits the fan he was going to sell some, for profit, and kick back and smoke the fruits of his labors... well, his $2 sticks have degraded so badly, that even he can't palate them anymore... and he refuses to discuss anything cigars with me anymore.  Every now and then he mentions pipe smoking and pipe tobacco, but he is done with cigars and his 300 or 400 dog rockets will probably be passed on in his will to some extremely lucky relative !
