just a little FYI for Knuck42 and anyone else who reads these I am changing how I review to the following format. The nerd in me is taking over to make this more math orientated.

Aesthetics: 10 points for good looking and 1 for UGLY.

Construction: 10 points for how well it was rolled and filled.

Cut and pre-light draw: 10 points for ease of cut and a good draw 1 for having to use a draw poker.

First few puffs: 5 points for initial reaction.

taste: 10 points for each 1/4 of the cigar for a total of 40 points possible.

Final reaction: 5 points for general like/dislike

burn: 10 for good burn, 5 for mixed success, and 1 for lot of problems.

Strength: 10 points based on my likes of strength. I like around the medium so ones around medium strength will score better with me and really strong or really weak cigars.

That should = 100

First review on the new format is a LA China Double Robusto I recieved from JxBr

Aesthetics: This was a medium to dark brown wrapper that the excess was left overlapping the foot. The cigar was oval in shape not round, don't know if this was intended to be or it was slightly crushed in the bottom of the desktop humy I have. had several small veins. score of 7.5 due to different look.

Construction: This one had several small torn spots in the wrapper and was underfilled. the whole cigar was very spongey. as mentioned above the excess wrapper was left hanging over the foot. Will have to go with a 5.9 for the underfilling.

Cut and pre-light draw: cut was easy and solid. pre-light draw was very loose and had the taste of cocao and coffee. I was initially worried about the draw due to the excess wrapper but it did not effect the draw in any way. will go with a 9

First few puffs: Strong punch off the bat. I could not really pick up many flavors at first becasue this was so powerful. did taste some coffee and bit of strong earthy tastes. will go with a 3.

taste: first 1/4 of the cigar was staying strong with coffee dominating, several flavors were just out of my reach of tasting. 5. the second 1/4 the strength subsided some and the coffee taste still dominated. cocao and a earthy musty taste were ditected. 5. from 1/2 to 3/4 the strength subided more as did the coffee taste. a sweet floral sunflower? taste could be ditected along with more of a chocolate taste. 9. the final 1/4 dropped off badly. the floral taste remained but was matched by this very harse acid taste. it was just to bitter for me to finish, I tossed this one with about an 1.5 inches left to go. 3. total taste points is 22 if the flavors from 1/2 to 3/4 had stayed this one would have been very good..

Final reaction: I will give this a 2.7 overall the tastes were good for the most part just never really developed and then turned bad.

burn: 5 for the burn had to tuchup a few times.

Strength: this was a bit to strong for me this early in the morning. will give a 6. I think I should have waited a year or 2 for this one.

final score for the La China double Robo is a 61.1

A dicent cigar with good potential just smoked a little to soon. :(

Nice review.  I think the new format will take a little getting used to, but I like the idea of organising it.

'98 Juan Lopez Patricia

This is a PC sized little firecracker.  Nicely rolled with no soft or hard spots, just nice and firm.  No veins in the wrapper & a neatly applied triple cap.  Xicar cutter snipped through the head effortlessly and the prelight draw was smooth but revealed a sort of harshness that was surprising coming from a cigar with so much age on it.  I must admit that my first impression was that it tasted much like a cigarette.

Upon light up this taste intensified and I found myself wondering if I had accidental lit up a Pal Mal by mistake.  LOL

After a few draws, this flavor muted some, but it never did go away.  During the first third notes of espresso and cocoa did emerge, but that harsh cigarette flavor also remained.  The second third was about the same.  At the end of the second third, the finish began to kick in.  At this point the other flavors began to drop out leaving only the harshness.  I pitched this one with about an inch and a half remaining.

The cigar also required one touch up along the way.

It bears mention that this cigar had been in my humi for only about three weeks to a month.  So there is a good chance that it was still not fully stabilized and therefore may smoke differently in a few weeks.

That said, I still must score this cigar based upon its performance today.  I have no choice but to rate it a 2.5.  This is by far the lowest rating I have ever given to an ISOM with such age.  And I am truly hoping that with a few additional weeks in the humi, things may get better.  I suppose time will tell.

2003 Punch Corona

Aesthetics: This was a nice looking light brown corona, with a few small veins showing in the wrapper. a good solid 6.5 score

Construction: their were no defects noted on the cigar at all, weight was good, not underfilled or overstuffed. could not find any soft or hard spots. 9

Cut and pre-light draw: cutter sailed right through this one, did cause a small crack as the cigar was a bit dry this afternoon after dryboxing it for 5 hours. prelight draw was perfect, with bit of a earthy leathery taste. 8.5 due to the crack at cutting.

First few puffs: first impreshion was not very impressive, not much taste. could pickup on the earthy and bit of leather. 2 pts.

taste: after this baby got going the tastes started to show them selves. the leather and earthy taste mellowed out to background flavors allowing nice floral and ceader tastes to develop. the first 1/4 the ceader was the main taste with just hint of sweetness in the mix. the remaining 3/4 of the stick the floral tastes took over. I could detect sunflower, rose, and some other sweet flavor. scores of 6, 8, 8, 8

Final reaction: I smoked this till less than a 1/4 inch of it remained, my index finger and thumb are still hurting form the heat. taste never did get bad. 5

burn: burn was a bit off, had to relight after first few puffs due to it went out, also had a few runners that corrected themselves. 6

Strength: this was a good solid medium body smoke that if I had more of would be in my regular rotation. 8

Total score is 6.5+9+8.5+2+6+8+8+8+5+6+8=73

First few puffs: first impreshion was WOW. pure of hot peper, my mouth was burning like I was smoking a banana peper. 5 pts.

taste: the peper dominated and overpowered all taste for first 1/4, after that mellowed out and I could pickup some nutty flavors (walnut and chestnut) just past 1/2 way some earthy and leather notes replaced the peper, last 1/4 was all leather and clay.  scores of 7, 8, 8, 6.5

858 Rosado

Nice fine evening today, so decided to have an 858 after going ot the dentist this morning.

Aesthetics: Nice looking wrapper with a bit of toothyness to it, great ceader smell (duh) nice firm feel, well balanced. 8.5

Construction: their were no defects noted on the cigar at all, weight was good, good bunching of the leaves. could not find any soft or hard spots. 8.5

Cut and pre-light draw: cutter sailed right through this one, prelight draw was solid, with bit of a earthy leathery ceader tastes. 8

First few puffs: all ceader with just hint of some bitter sweet tastes. 4 pts.

taste: ceader was the dominant taste throughout this cigar. noted a bit of bitter expresso at first that melloed to a almond taste at about the 1/2 way mark. bits of leather and grass were just in the background and never really came through to the front. 8,7.5, 8, 7.5

Final reaction: I nubbed this baby, taste got a bit hot and the expresso bitterness got a bit to bitter at the last few puffs but overall good finish with nice aftertaste. 3.75

burn and draw: solid burn and draw, lots and lots of smoke rolled from this baby. was a bit worried becasue it was a bit windy outside but the burn was spot on. 9

Strength: good medium bodied smoke. 8

Total score is 8.5+8.5+8+4+8+7.5+8+7.5+3.75+9+8=79.75  Great construction and a very good ceader taste. :)

96 Fonseca Cosacos

was gifted one of these by a great BOTL. Thank you very much Qbear. It was a nice morning so I decided to light this baby up with my morning coffee (brewed expresso roast from kroger).

Aesthetics: Paper cover had a bit of a yellow tint to it. Wrapper had a dry appearance with a bit of totthy texture, nice golden brown color.  9.5

Construction: their were no defects noted on the cigar at all, weight was good, good bunching of the leaves. could not find any soft or hard spots. 8.5

Cut and pre-light draw: cutter sailed right through this one, prelight draw was solid, with bit of a earthy and coffee tastes coming through. 8

First few puffs: all expreso and cream. 4 pts.

taste: This little gem was dominated by differing coffee (expresso and kenyan) and cream tastes throughout the entire length of the smoke. I could pick out some nice spice flavors as well (nutmeg, all spice, and ciniminon). This was a great mild cigar that really went well with the coffee I was drinking. 8,8,8,8

Final reaction: I nubbed this baby, got just a bit bitter at the end because of some burn issues but all in all a great ending to a good cigar. 3

burn and draw: Draw was perfect no problems what so ever. Burn was a bit problamict at times, I was out side and the wind was effecting the burn especially at the end. 7.3

Strength: Mild and smoooooth. 7

Total score is 9.5+8.5+8+4+8+8+8+8+3+7.3+7=79.3 this is one of my favorite cigar brands due to its mild coffee and cream flavors with just a bit of spiceyness mixed in.
