The points you are missing are these:

-- "common sense" isn't what caused you to not buy these cigars; it's simply not

-- the knowledge you gained from others, as well as some of your own experiences in life, is what caused you to not buy these cigars

-- "looking around" for knowledge is still depending on others to have provided it for you in one form or another

-- you profess "independence" and yet offer guidance and input to others... your children, in this case... and I would hope others as well, if you feel you have some useful input to offer.

The collective resources and knowledge are what the Internet is all about.  Playing Monday morning quarterback and mocking people who didn't have the "common sense" isn't adding to that collective.

Nor is professing independence and self-reliance when in fact you are being utterly reliant on others when you "look around yourself" for knowledge.

"Common sense" wouldn't have helped anyone avoid buying these cigars; knowledge they gained from a multitude of other people's experiences and factual data about cigar production would.  That's why, just like with your children, providing a decent foundation and frame of reference for people new to the hobby will assist them.

I rely on people every single day for their input and opinion.  The whole TL situation, and the situation with Bruce, was spearheaded by a whole bunch of people.  It wasn't common sense that uncovered either situation.  It was people working together, and sharing their knowledge and opinions.

That's the point.

It is pretty clear that John the original poster likes the status quo.  Doesn't sound like he cares if newbies get screwed. Problem is we were all newbies once and everyone can use a little help now and again. Sounds like he has his sources and tough shit for people who have to buy in country.

Well guess what there are many of my friends who are professionals with jobs that cannot be risked. We help them out. We don't jack them up because they can't order over seas.
