Interesting approach but I think I'd feel a little weird doing that, like I'm telling them, "You don't merit a whole stick, here's a piece so you feel like one of the big kids." LOL Maybe just carying some smaller cigars for the moochers would accomplish what you set out to do without the "insult" factor. For me though it's about not wasting good smokes on people who couldn't care less what they're smoking. So it's not really so much about the size of the cigar as it is about the quality of the tobacco that went into it. I find that most moochers, (as well as a decent percentage of guys who consider themselves "cigar guys"), really only care about having a big, fat stick to puff on that has a band with some brand recognition attached to it. Lord knows there are plenty of sticks that are made with cheap-o/low end tobacco that fall into this category.

Good point but these "kids" were very happy. And they left the halves on the table too!
If these were people I knew it would have been my pleasure to give them decent cigars.

never had any moochers but i always got a couple of bundle sticks for the new guy wanting to try a cigar. They may not recognize the brand but just tell them that you don't want them to suffer nicotine sickness and that's why they can't have top shelf.

Great post...
Ever since I gave a friend who is a cig smoker a DPG Blue... He had about 3 puff set it down and left it... and started up with cigs.... I didn't say anything ... I let it go.... when I asked him. How it was... he said it was good... I didn't ask why he didn't finish it. Yet he was asking to smoke a cigar. From now on if they want to try a cigar they can do on their dime... If I know the person values good cigars I have no problem givin a great cigar to them...
I keep a separate humi full oh yard gars and when they want one I let them pick it out. This way they feel empowered by their own choice.

I've had a few guys I've spent the time educating on the finer points of cigars. I figure if I give someone a dog rocket they will never get into the hobby. I tend to try and pair the cigar to the person, what flavor profile they might like by finding out what they enjoy eating, drinking and are in the mood for. I try to start them off with a lower dollar stick but I don't tend to keep many budget smokes as I believe in smoking higher quality less frequently.
If they never get it, well then I stop supplying there education. I have found more often than not that if they are truly interested in the hobby and education they will want to purchase there own and Pay if forward for the education you help them get.

We've all got a few like this, the brother-in-law who thinks some short-fill Don Nobody's are the greatest cigar ever. The neighbor who smokes dried out shite sticks from the local beer distributer and thinks he's smoking a slice of heaven. Or the co-worker who puffs on some crusty Garcia y Vega and thinks he's basking in luxury like a Kennedy.

Question: When these folks come a'moochin' do you have cheap-ass low grade sticks set aside for them? Or do you hook them up with something you would smoke?
I give away all of the stuff I get in the question 2 down. I've got an entire desktop full of it.
Question: As a rule do you try to educate them as to what better quality cigars are, or just let them go on thinking that they know what they're doing?
I will open the conversation and see if they are interested, If they already know everything :bla: or they aren't interested then I let them be happy.
Question: What the hell do you do when they hand you something they think is a good cigar? Do you actually try smoking it in front of them so as to avoid offending them? Do you make an excuse and tell them you'll smoke it later and then pitch it and lie the next time you see them? Or do you actually tell them that there's no way in hell you'd actually smoke their rancid pooch projectile?
Always thank them, compliment the cigar in some way, and put it in my pocket/travel humi and take it home. See first question above.

As a maduro hound, I hand out maduros that may not be that complex or even long filler but that have the basic flavor profile that perked my curiosity enuf to want to learn more: mr b maduro lonsdales, oliva maduro bundles, etc.
