I may not necessarily be the best reference.  My thoughts are as follows:

From time to time there are virtuosos of one kind of another, and they are not seen for generations at a time.  John Moses Browning was one of those.

If it feeds from a mag, and it's a hand gun, then I am a 1911a1 or variant thereof guy, and I only own one caliber, 45ACP; unless it is a CC backup, then there are a lot of options because when you need it the gun you have in your pocket is better than the one in the safe, no matter what the caliber.  I think my little Walther PPK is just adorable.

If you want more than 7 in the mag, there are options for that too:

If it's a wheel gun, for the most part I like Colt or Ruger.  Rugers are ugly but they work, and cost a whole lot less than a Python.

I was hoping that you would chime in Wade. It's funny that you mention the Para because I know they have an Expert SS in stock at the shop. It's a little more than I wanted to spend but I will take a close look at it tomorrow.

Once again thanks to everyone for their input.

1911 type pistols are not for everyone, but I used to shoot IPSC.  I have shot thousands of rounds through them.  The operation is instinctive to me.  The single action trigger that breaks like glass is the one thing that no other pistol can duplicate, but they are single action, it's not for everyone.

Para's have a rep for not always feeding great. FWIW every feeding problem I ever had with a 1911 was a mag problem, not a pistol problem.

Agreed.  Buy Wilson mags for 1911s and problem usually solved.

Personally,  I don't think a 1911 is a good gun to start with.  Don't get me wrong,  I love them and own several in .45 and a long slide in 10mm that I love.  That being said, the manual of arms is too involved to me for someone starting out.  I think of it as starting out at 16 with a manual transmission corvette.  Can it be done?  Of course.  Is it the best choice?  Probably not.  I'd start with something simpler first.  Lots of good suggestions above,  with my preference being the Glock.  In 9mm, is look at the 17, or even the 34 which had an even longer sight radius.

Just my opinion. ..

I just wanted to say thanks  to everyone that offered their input on this thread.

I ended up going with the FNS-9. http://www.fnhusa.com/l/products/handguns/fns-series/fns-9/ in black with the optional safety.

It fit all the criteria well, but most importantly it just felt right in my hand. Now I need to run a few hundred rounds through it and see if I still feel the same.

Sounds like you got a FNH... great reputation and a solid performer, congrats.

I was a bit late to the game here, but I love my Springfield XD-S, and now with the their new grip zone 2.0 technology added, its even a more solid gun.  A lot of value for the money... its accurate, and very reliable for CC or just range work in the $500 range for a .45ACP.  I am partial to Kimber, Ruger, and Springfield, and can make some personal recommendations in each line.  It all comes down to how it feels in your hand, and if you have small/large hands, thin/fat fingers, etc.  Most gun shops will help you out with these issues to fit you with soemthign that feels right in your hands.

Good luck and be safe.

You may want to look at the Kahr CT9 and the Kahr CM9.  American made and can be generally be had for under $300.  I prefer the CT9 (the larger of the 2) for open carry as it is thin and comfortable to carry anyhow but the CM9 (or my HK P7M8) usually comes with when when I need/want to be discrete.

Just one guys opinion.  Good luck in your search.
