Banning IP addresses from public available networks, retail and airports come to mind, would also effectively ban legitamite members when on those nets. I will now understand if i am in LAX and can't go shopping... lol

Heheh, I just looked at my IPs. I my account shows well over 100 IP addresses (I'm not going to count, it's a page full)
The point is that even if I ban a particular IP address it does little to keep someone away from the site. It is not hard to find a different IP.

I didn't ban his IPs. If someone has one or two, yea, but for that many it makes no sense. I can't tell which if any are the primary. Again, the point is that in reality site admin can do little to keep someone from coming here and posting. It's the reality of the internet.

Typically one location only reports 1 ip for the multiple computers right? The IP of you home router is reported no matter how many computers you have! Same with work.
A lot of people travel, coffee shop hot spots, even mcdonalds hotspot, will all be reported. Banning this IP would also ban anyone else from that location from signing up or accessing the site.

If you think about it....15 different IP's isn't that much.
desktop
laptop
phone
work computer(s)
Multiple home computers....
Old phones as years go on.....
Easy to get 15.
P.S changing your IP is also quite obvious as the number gets higher. What their reasoning may be I have no idea.

Most internet users can get a new IP simply by unplugging their modem for a few seconds. It's too expensive/difficult to reserve one IP per customer, so the ISP buys a bulk package of IPs and assigns them at random as needed when your modem turns on and contacts their central server.
The only half-effective way to ban someone this way is to figure out the subnet(s) ("pool(s)") of IPs used by someone's ISP and ban all of them. Of course, it's easy for innocent people to get banned as a result.
From a technical standpoint, an IP ban is almost useless.

Hmmm not so sure about that....Either way if you move to a different place of living or switch ISP's. The possibilities are endless.
Like you said coffee shops and places with WiFi.
I think my point still stands, 15 isn't that much.

Yes the first part was correct. Unless you pay for a dedicated IP (or IP block), you have one that hits your modem and stays with it...and is the only one given out by your house. It's good for x-amount of time. If you turn it off and then back on a day later, it will likely have a new IP.
Why are these guys cycling IPS...1) they could flush it often 2) if he's really webguy he has access to a lot of locations!
I'd be curious as to the block they are all coming from! :angl:

It's not a big deal. Basically, the software allows website owners to track visitors--but only on the owner's website. The software won't show the owners what you've been doing elsewhere on the internet (although your browser does send the last page it was on when it loads a new page, unless it's an https page.) The software does grab a few technical details from your browser, but it's nothing incriminating.
If someone wants to spy on you, they need to do it from the source. Nobody has a big database about your internet habits, assuming that your PC is clean and you fully trust both your ISP and your gov't :)

I wasn't worried about anybody spying on or tracking me; I'm just glad I don't have software like that or else I'd never get done spying on and tracking everybody else! ;D

I have a question Wade? If TL made a donation what was the name on the account? If his name wasn't Rowby Goren, Rowdy Roddy Piper or whatever the flip it was, wouldn't this have indicated scumbag tendencies? Just a thought, maybe this has been discussed somewhere else and might have missed it. John
