"Habanos Crime Family".

The old men in question were fans of The Sopranos and characterized themselves online as a cigar mafia of sorts.  Some of them would even dress in mafia-style clothing (think dark suits, dark shirts, white ties, and fedoras) when meeting for "sit downs" together.

(How do I know this?  They posted photos.)

Then there was the JR forum and the offshoot the VIs

I found CA back in the 90s, at some point I registered.  It was a simple with green text lists of threads and still did that odd threaded display.  It didn't do much for me.  Found CF in 98, but didn't trust the WWW yet to actually register anywhere.  Finally joined in '99.  Joined JR at about the same time.

I don't know how many of you rememer that this was actually DannyMs URL until I got it in 2000.

These days I'm still a member over on CF but I visit about once or twice a yr.

That was the boom time not only for cigars but for cigar BBs.  It was all new to us.

The JRBB was legendary.  I learned a lot from that forum.

I remember that CA forum. It was also ok if you were in the "in" crowd. Once accepted by the "senior" members you were pretty much able to state opinions without issue. Newbies, man they hammered them most of the time, and by newbies it was only that they were new to that forum. They could have had 15 years smoking cigars but it didn't matter. All that seemed to matter was time on the forum and post count.

It is relatively easy for members to kill off a good forum and sometimes moderators fall on their own swords to make it happen. One such forum I fondly remember that I used to enjoy immensely was one where there was a bunch of admins but no mods. One of the admins, who I thought was generally a good guy, got nasty on the bombing forum because some of us (yeah I was one of those us's) wanted a 'victim' to post up pics of the carnage from a group bombing we had done. We're talking like 30 participants so the damage would've been legendary. He dressed us down and chastised us, shamed us for asking for pics (If he wants to post them, that should be HIS decision to make . . .), to the point the forum went immediately silent, members left, and of course, victim never posted pictures which is what you was encouraged to do in exchange of someone being generally nice to you. It was, of course, light-hearted banter and he turned it into an opportunity to gaslight us instead of keeping his damn mouth shut. In the end, they are lucky if a bomb flies once a month and activity there is just maybe a dozen regulars where it used to be hundreds a day and a half dozen to a dozen bombings a week.

We have members here that are just plain dicks. Very few but I have each of them written down somewhere and also a list of who not to deal with but a new one comes along every once in a while. We have one particular member who apparently knows so much that isn't so and doesn't mind posting his overbearing radical political opinions all over the board. He is not likeable at all and he does occasionally offer up items at reasonable prices. However, he is so unliked here, a lot of people refuse to buy from him regardless of the price. This, of course, results in him continuously bumping posts not realizing he is black balled, per se.

If you don't think things can get out of hand here, continue to read the shout box. Another feature I've wondered often if it's useful. If you have a strong opinion? Put it in the Battlezone. My humble opinion of course.

If you want to visit a brutal forum that serves no useful purpose whatsoever, try the CB forum. Half the people there need to be banned.

But, for the most part, this is a great forum and buy a lot of stuff here, though it is generally from just a couple of people.

R/cigars used to be fun like that, bombs and such constantly.  Until Reddit killed the market and trading aspects of course.
