This thread might be long from finished. Moving it to the BZ.
Be sure and make deposits in all areas of your life, because at some point you will need to make a withdraw. No deposits are more important than those made in relationships.

I can attest to what Michael has stated above (Srsmiscer)...I rec'd 2 of those boxes of 1966s.  I can honestly say that they were excellent fakes.  Box, packaging, paperwork, information, bands, etc, was all legit...except for the barcodes/boxcode seals, and the cigars.  I believe these boxes contained well rolled farmies or otherwise, and they were just rebanded as 1966s.  The sizes and twists on the caps were well done too.  These came from Manuel at Cigar Trading Online (CTO), which was not something that the members participating in the GB were aware of.  CTO is an Estanco in Spain with a history of selling fakes.  Monte Grand Reservas were also sold in the same GB and came from the same source.  other boxes in this GB came from LCDHs and other reputable vendors, NOT CTO.  So, the 1966s and MGRs were he only suspect boxes in this GB.  I personally do not know the extent of the sale/GB deal with CTO, or how many boxes were involved, I would speculate at least 20+ 1966s, and 15 or so boxes of MGRs.

As for my situation, after doing my thorough research, the 2 boxes I received were returned to CTO and I did receive a refund, after a few months of bickering/haggeling/complaining, but I was made whole, minus 20-30 bucks total, which I did't complain too much about.  Thankfully, I did not buy any of the MGRs from the same vendor.

I have pics somewhere of the 1966s and I will see if I can dig them up this weekend... but they key is the barcode seal.  Everything else is legit, close to perfect, so much that its difficult to detect anything out of the ordinary with the naked eye. I have seen the fakes in question up close, and I will gladly help out here, if I can.

Also, if that member who was leading the group is still a member of this forum, why is he still a member here?

I am not sure if that member is still active here...probably not, and I don't even remember his handle here, and it was different on the private board that he ran.

I am guessing that it was not brought up here b/c those cigars were bought on a GB from a different private cigar forum, and usually those issues don't propagate between cigar forums/boards.

It's forum board protocol to leave board issues, on that board. There are MANY debatable pros/cons to that unwritten rule. It has always seemed to work out pretty well and keep the drama to a minimum.

With that said, there are other resources out there such as the scumbagslist for this reason. I believe....this person is actually on that list and has been for a very long time. So, if due diligence wasn't done........

BTW....1966 group buy? C'mon SMH

No need to SMH...
1966s were alot more common in late 2011/early 2012, which was roughly the timeframe of this GB.

In the Facebook age I don't know if that should work the same way anymore. There are a decent amount of folks here that originated from Facebook and some stuff that gets traded on facebook ends up here. I understand not wanting to deal with drama, but when fake cigars sold on facebook pop up in other places the drama could easily get 10x worse. I think having the community be in the loop about scams and fake sellers is important when so many people trade across multiple forums and platforms.

And I'm not directing this comment at anyone in particular, but can we stop with the scumbagslist already? The site hasn't been maintained in years and to my knowledge only exists as an archived page somewhere. Some of the worst offenders in the cigar community today aren't on the list anyway which makes it totally useless IMO.
