Hit and miss problem for me, across the board on all sizes, and even if aged... I probably smoked about 2-3 dozen and maybe half were oily at the head and leaking the oils out when I finally put it down in the final third.

I have smoked boxes of #46s.  Have 46s and some other sizes for most years.  I get some tar on one, maybe 2 in a box.  Seems to be more of how I am smoking the cigar and my cut than the cigar.  I just smoked an 888 on Saturday and had no problems.  Been smoking through a box of 46s from 2008 and may have had one.  Smoked an OR at the holidays and it smoked like a dream.  Just been my experience. 

Sounds like I've just got poor luck with the Anejos, which tells me that I should just put them down. I've never had it with this consistency with any other brand, so I've long ago discounted my cut or draw technique as being the culprit.  And we all know that Fuentes rushes these smokes to market.

What's interesting is that although it pops up every now and again with a Dominican or Nicaraguan, I've only had it on one cc (out of maybe 1.5 thousand smoked) and a simple recut fixed it (and that was a 1 year old upmann #2). And it seems that the Dominican or Nicaraguan brands where it has occurred were less than premium.  I don't think I've ever gotten tar from a don pepin, tatuaje, oliva, or padron.

Yes, found that a straight cut is key - even a 2nd snip 1/2 through to take the buildup off. 

The first release of the XXX power ranger had tar problems also. I smoked 3 of the 888 and had tar problems with 2 of the 3, and smoked half a box of sharks with only 3 of them having this issue. The cigars I have had issues with I re-cut and it seemed to remedy the problem. This leads me to believe that some of the anejo's need to have a deeper cut than others. I used the Xikar V cut on most of the pointed head cigars, including the 888.

Haven't really had that issue with the Anejo. I clip the cap (prefer the 50), light it and smoke a slow and steady pace. If you like to smoke the sharks then clip the tip a bit more once you notice the bitterness. I bought a couple 888 at the b&m, I still need to try but other than that and the lancero ive tried them all and the 49 did get a little bitter but with another clip and slowing down helps immensely.

The funneling of the smoke through a torp tip usually leads to tar buildup.

I love Fuentes but I have experienced this as well. I've also had the tar buildup on casa lanceros as well as other opus. Keeping the end as dry as possible eliminates most of it (not wet lipping the end)
