8-5-8's: Good instructional cigar for the impact the wrapper makes?

Post by romad119 »

I am looking to educate some of my Airmen just getting into cigars and using 8-5-8s to show how the wrapper impacts the cigar.  I'm tracking that they come in:

Candela
Maduro
Natural
Rosado
Sungrown

Does anyone know if the binder/filler is changed between the variants or not at all, therefore making this a good candidate for my goal?

As far as I know it is just a different wrapper.

The Maduro, Natural, and SG should be enough. I would be impressed if you can smoke all of the candela. The Rosado takes quite a bit of time (years) for it to get rid of that "AF acrid rosado taste." (I just coined that myself  :bla:)

The blends are the same save for the wrapper on these, but as Hamlet once stated, wrapper only imparts 20% difference in final taste.

And then there is one super rare version.  The 858 Sr Blend which is a completely different binder/filler.

It was the special rolled box someone won in a past CFCF auction.  Like this year's Carlito's Table, the winner got to request what cigar and blend he wanted rolled.  I was just lucky enough to have this man share one with me.
