"For a friend..."

Post by MKitt-man »

Why is it that when people want to sell something at what those 'in the know' would consider 'rather high (!)' prices, it's always "for a friend"?

Can't take the heat personally I guess...  :-[

I've noticed this as well.

While I really couldn't give a fuck, if you're going to heavily gouge people (and I don't care at all, it won't be me who pays your price)......Just come out with it "This shit is rare for most people, so I'm starting it off at a sizable premium. If it doesn't sell I'll lower the price or keep it".

I can respect that.

You gotta figure if your "friend" has this (insert stupidly rare format or cigar), he can fucking register himself and has to have trader feedback SOMEWHERE on the web to back himself up.

I can see it now "I'm selling this for a friend who doesn't own a computer but has 15 boxes of CGR's he would like to sell at $2,500 each. I know it's odd but he can't even use Microsoft word let alone internet explorer."

The other side of the coin is where you have a seller who has a good reputation vs a seller who in not on the board but wants to unload some stuff.  I have sold for friends who do not have the number of trades that I have or who just don't want to go through the hassel of registering.  I stand behind their product because I know and trust them implicitly.  I've never had a complaint about stuff I've sold for a friend.  I list it as selling for a friend so the buyer doesn't freak when he sees a different return address.

I have a friend who has this big sore on his, you know. What should I, I mean, he, do?
Great coffee, cigars and whiskey. Love them all.

Not quite the same as using it as an excuse.

That's my point. Not everyone who sells for a friend is using it as an excuse to mark up cigars and not get blamed for it.

Hey guys check out those "for a friend" $500 Behike 54's ....

Because that isn't a nearly $200 markup for a fresh 2010 box.  ;)

I think this depends on what vendor is used... typically, a box of BHK 54s is over $400 from most reputable vendors.  There is one vendor that is a lot cheaper on BHKs, and requires "membership" or vouching to get into the club, so I would think that seller's buddy is probably not getting his cigars from the cheap place.  Besides, I am not shocked when I see a box of BHK54 or BHK56 go for 425 and up (no higher than 500) on here, as that is pretty much the going rate still.

It occurs to me that a friend, a true friend, would understand if I told them that attaching my handle, and thereby by reputaion, to their prices makes me uncomfortable for whatever reason so I can not in good concience do it.  Clearly those who post F/S threads for friends are either not concerned with this or do not feel that their friend's pricing is out of line.
